Bone China vs Porcelain vs Stoneware: Which Body is Right for Your Store

Understanding Ceramic Bodies

Choosing the right ceramic body is crucial for your product line. Each material has distinct properties that affect appearance, durability, and cost. Here we break down the three most common types: bone china, porcelain, and stoneware.

Bone China

Bone china contains bone ash (typically 30-40%), giving it a unique translucency and a bright, white appearance. It is lightweight yet surprisingly strong, making it ideal for fine dining and upscale restaurants. Bone china is chip-resistant and has a smooth, refined finish. However, it is the most expensive option due to the cost of materials and firing process. If your target market values elegance and tradition, bone china is a premium choice.

Porcelain

Porcelain is fired at high temperatures (around 1300°C), resulting in a dense, vitrified body that is non-porous and highly durable. It has a classic white or ivory color and can be decorated with underglaze or overglaze patterns. Porcelain is versatile, suitable for both casual and formal dining. It is more affordable than bone china but still offers excellent quality. For everyday use in hotels, cafes, and homes, porcelain is a reliable choice.

Stoneware

Stoneware is fired at lower temperatures (around 1200°C), making it more porous and heavier than porcelain. It has a rustic, earthy look and is often used for casual tableware, such as dinner plates, bowls, and mugs. Stoneware is durable and chip-resistant, but it may not be as white or translucent as porcelain. It is the most budget-friendly option, making it popular for cafes and family-style restaurants.

New Bone China

Some manufacturers offer 'new bone china,' which mimics the look of bone china but uses alternative materials like calcium carbonate and zinc oxide. It is less expensive than true bone china but still provides a bright white body and good durability. This can be a cost-effective compromise for buyers who want the bone china aesthetic without the high price.

Making the Right Choice

Consider your brand positioning and customer expectations. If you sell premium dinnerware, bone china or new bone china may be the way to go. For everyday use, porcelain offers a balance of quality and affordability. For a casual, rustic vibe, stoneware is perfect. Also, think about the weight and feel in hand—your customers will notice.

At our factory, we produce all these materials, and our MOQ is 100 pieces per style, so you can test different bodies with minimal risk. We also offer custom decals and logos from 500 pieces, allowing you to create a unique line.
